Last week, AI models gained the ability to operate SaaS tools autonomously. Not through APIs. Not through integrations. Through the actual interfaces built for humans. Within days, the SaaS market began its collapse. Tools that took years to build, millions to fund, and entire companies to operate can now be replaced by an AI that learns the interface in minutes.

This isn’t another cycle of disruption. This is the moment when the moat disappeared entirely.

And it forces a question most of us have been avoiding:

Where does human value actually live now?

Why This Time Actually Is Different

I know what you’re thinking. “People said this about the internet. About no-code. About every automation wave. This is just another panic cycle.”

Here’s why that comfortable dismissal doesn’t work anymore.

Previous technology waves automated tasks. This wave automates judgment-adjacent work, the layer we believed was safely human. Previous cycles still rewarded better operators. Someone who could use Salesforce more effectively than their competitor had an advantage. Someone who could navigate Photoshop faster created more value. The tools were multipliers, but the human wielding them still mattered.

This cycle collapses differentiation at the operator level entirely.

When AI can operate any tool as well as an expert within hours of encountering it, being “good at the software” stops being a competitive advantage. When it can produce expert-level output across domains, being “knowledgeable” stops being scarce. When it works 24/7 at near-zero marginal cost, being “fast” or “efficient” becomes meaningless.

The historical escape hatches – get better at the tools, learn more, work faster – are closing. This isn’t about a new skill to learn. It’s about the category of “skills as a competitive advantage” becoming obsolete.

This is structural, not cyclical.

What We’re Actually Losing (And Haven’t Named Yet)

The surface-level conversation focuses on lost skills, obsolete expertise, and vanishing efficiency advantages. That’s real. But it misses what people are actually experiencing beneath the anxiety.

What’s collapsing isn’t just your skill set. It’s the architecture of self-worth built on top of it.

When output is no longer scarce, self-worth tied to output collapses. When knowledge is abundant and instantly accessible, expertise no longer stabilises identity. When speed is free, being “the fast one” loses its meaning. When your entire professional identity has been built on “I’m the person who can do X better/faster/more thoroughly,” and X becomes a commodity available to everyone, the question becomes:

Who am I when my output no longer differentiates me?

This is the hidden rupture. Not just a market shift, an identity crisis most people don’t have language for yet.

So, Where Does Value Actually Live?

Strip away skills. Strip away knowledge. Strip away speed, efficiency, cost advantages, AI has won on all of those dimensions and will continue to widen the gap.

What’s left?

Your judgment. Your inner authority.

But we need to be precise about what that actually means, because these words get misused.

Judgment is not:

  • Instinct or gut feeling
  • Personal preference
  • Confidence or conviction
  • Intuition-as-impulse
  • Rejecting data, tools, or AI assistance

Judgment is:

  • Context-holding across incommensurable domains
  • Trade-off navigation when there is no optimal answer
  • Responsibility-bearing decision-making under irreducible uncertainty
  • Choosing what should matter in the first place

Here’s the distinction that matters: AI optimises within parameters. Humans choose the parameters.

AI can tell you the most efficient path. It cannot tell you which destination is worth pursuing. It can generate a hundred options. It cannot decide which one aligns with what you’re actually trying to build. It can show you all the data. It cannot choose what question is worth asking.

Most importantly, it cannot bear responsibility for the consequences.

This isn’t a current limitation that future models will overcome. This is categorical. AI can simulate judgment, can even produce outputs that look like judgment, but it cannot hold judgment because it has no stake in the outcome. It has no skin in the game. It doesn’t live with the consequences of being wrong.

You do.

And that’s where your value lives now. Not in knowing more, not in executing faster, not in being more efficient. In being willing and able to make calls when the parameters themselves are uncertain. In integrating context that spans technical feasibility, market dynamics, human psychology, ethical considerations, and factors that haven’t been named yet, simultaneously. In saying “this, not that” when no model can tell you which matters more.

Your edge, your actual competitive advantage, is no longer what you know or what you can do. It’s who you are. Your specific way of seeing. Your particular configuration of values, experience, taste, and discernment that produces a distinctive point of view. The unique combination of contexts you hold that no one else holds in quite the same way.

That’s not replicable. Not by AI. Not by another human.

The Only Path Forward

Understanding yourself is no longer optional introspection. It’s infrastructure.

If your value lives in your judgment, you need to know:

  • What you actually value (not what you think you should value)
  • Where your perception is unusually clear (and where it’s systematically distorted)
  • What patterns do you recognise that others miss
  • What trade-offs you willing to make that others aren’t

And you need to exercise that authority. Not as performance. As practice.

This means making decisions that can’t be delegated to AI because they require choosing between incommensurable goods. Decisions about:

  • What problems are worth solving
  • What constraints are negotiable
  • What quality mean in this specific context
  • When to stop optimising and ship
  • Who to build for and who to ignore

These aren’t abstract philosophical questions. These are Monday morning decisions that determine whether what you build matters.

The future doesn’t belong to people who can use AI well; everyone will be able to do that. It belongs to people who know what to point AI at. Who can hold the context AI can’t. Who can make the calls AI can’t make? Who bears the weight of decisions that have real consequences?

The work now is internal. Know yourself with precision. Trust your judgment enough to exercise it. Develop your authority so you can hold your ground when the data is ambiguous, when the models disagree, and when there is no clear answer. We do all of it at the Inner Authority Lab.

Because in a world where knowledge, skills, and execution are abundant, the only sustainable competitive advantage is the quality of your judgment and the clarity of your authority.

That can’t be automated.

But it can be abdicated.
